Group A Strep infections can cause a number of different symptoms such as a sore throat, impetigo (which is a skin infection Impetigo is caused by Staphylococcus aureus not Strep A, and fever. In some cases, Strep A can cause a distinctive red rash, hence Scarlet Fever

Any illness in children can be very concerning. For the majority of children, however, these illnesses will be minor, and care can be provided at home with simple measures such as paracetamol, ibuprofen, and drinking plenty to help relieve symptoms. If your child only has a sore throat these simple measures work well however it is important to keep a close eye on your child.

If you are concerned about your child’s health, please visit www.111.nhs.uk and you will be signposted to the right care, at the right place at the right time, whether that is an appointment with your GP or another urgent care provider, to arrange a call back from a health professional. If your child is aged 0-5 and you are concerned about their health call 111 directly.

In very rare cases Group A Strep bacteria can cause a more serious illness known as invasive Group A Strep where hospital treatment may be required.

As a parent, if you think your child is seriously ill, trust your judgement and in an emergency dial 999.
